A water softener sits on your main line and swaps those calcium and magnesium minerals out before they reach your pipes. The real decision isn't whether you need one. It's how the unit decides when to regenerate, and how much capacity you buy for your household.

Types and features to consider

• Electric vs non-electric. Electric softeners use a control head, timer based or metered, and need to sit near a power source. Kinetico's systems are non-electric, driven by moving water, with no timer or circuit board to repair down the road, and every cycle triggers on actual use instead of a fixed schedule, so there's less salt and water wasted. Both work well on Alberta water; non-electric trades a higher purchase price for fewer parts that can quit.
• Single tank vs twin tank. A single tank system commonly goes offline for two hours or more while it regenerates, letting hard water bypass through in the meantime; Kinetico's non-electric single tank Essential models are engineered to regenerate in about ten minutes to limit that gap. Twin tank systems, like Kinetico's Signature and Premier series, keep one tank in service at all times, so soft water never pauses. Worth it for larger households and homes with heavy simultaneous demand.
• Grain capacity, sized to your household. Capacity is the spec that matters. A common rule of thumb is 75 gallons per person per day multiplied by your hardness in grains per gallon; a family of four on typical Calgary hardness lands in the 30,000 to 40,000 grain range, which is why models like the 40,000 grain Whirlpool WHES40 are so common here. • Upkeep you can handle yourself. Beyond keeping the brine tank topped up with salt, the main job is the pre-filter. Worth knowing: a softener handles hardness only. It won't touch chlorine taste, sediment or chloramine. If those are your real complaint, look at drinking water systems or dechlorinators instead, or alongside.
